A Legacy of Tradition and Craftsmanship

Brief History of Lynchburg, TN

Lynchburg, Tennessee, established in the early 19th century, has a rich and varied history. The town was officially incorporated in 1841. In 1871, the Tennessee General Assembly created Moore County, designating Lynchburg as the county seat in 1873. (hmdb.org)

The origin of Lynchburg’s name is subject to debate. One theory suggests it was named after an early settler from Lynchburg, Virginia. Another posits it was named after an early resident named Tom Lynch. A third theory attributes the name to a “Judge Lynch,” who presided over a vigilante committee in the area sometime after the War of 1812. (en.wikipedia.org)

During the Civil War, Lynchburg’s residents predominantly supported the Confederacy. Company E of the Confederate Army’s 1st Tennessee Cavalry was composed mainly of local men. A monument honoring these Confederate soldiers stands on the lawn of the Moore County Courthouse. (en.wikipedia.org)

In the 1870s, Lynchburg became a significant center for mule trading and distilleries. By the 1880s, Moore County was home to fifteen registered distilleries, with Jack Daniel’s emerging as one of the most prominent. (en.wikipedia.org)

A devastating fire in 1883 destroyed much of the town, including the courthouse. The current courthouse was completed in 1885, and a separate jail, now a museum, was built in 1893. (en.wikipedia.org)

Prohibition laws enacted in 1909 halted local distillery operations. Although federal prohibition ended in 1933, state laws in Tennessee continued to prohibit alcohol production. Efforts led by Lem Motlow, Jack Daniel’s nephew, resulted in the repeal of these laws in 1937, allowing the distillery to resume operations. (en.wikipedia.org)

Today, Lynchburg is renowned for housing the Jack Daniel’s Distillery, a major tourist attraction. Despite its association with whiskey production, Moore County remains a dry county, prohibiting the sale of alcohol except at the distillery itself. (en.wikipedia.org)
