Decherd, Tennessee, established in 1853, originated as a vital stop along the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad, completed in 1851. The town was named for Peter S. Decherd, a Virginia lawyer who, alongside his business partner Ezekiel D. Sanford, developed the area into a thriving community. Mr. Decherd’s leadership included serving as a board member of the railroad, while Mr. Sanford played a critical role as an assistant engineer in constructing the renowned Cowan Tunnel.

During the Civil War, Decherd’s strategic location made it a focal point for control of the railway. While no major battles occurred, skirmishes were frequent. Union forces, under General Don Buell in 1862 and Colonel John T. Wilder in 1863, occupied the area temporarily, with the latter destroying parts of the railroad and Confederate supplies.

Despite these challenges, Decherd flourished. Incorporated in 1856 and re-chartered in 1901, the town grew steadily. It became home to Terrill College in the late 19th century and later welcomed prominent employers like Nissan Power Train Assembly and Henley Supply & Millworks.

Today, Decherd celebrates its rich heritage and strong community ties.
